Introduction

The Rio Grande, like the Lower Mississippi and the Arkansas-

White -Red, relies strongly On extractive industries. Both agriculture

and mining account for high percentages of total earnings. The Rio

Grande ranks 5th among the 20 Regions in its reliance On agriculture

(8.7 percent of regional earnings) and 7th in mining (D). In addition,

this region ranks 3rd among the Water Resources Regions in the

percent of total regional earnings accounted for by armed forces
