Management Situation by Revision Topic

The fourth FORPLAN model made was to maximize present net value with the incorporation of the
new silvicultural prescriptions and new management-area uses. The ability to use individual and
group selection allowed this model to harvest more volume than the other PNV model. Even though
the opening restrictions were at capacity, this model had more silvicultural selections and was able to
generate more sale quantities and a greater net revenue.

Table 11I-9. Stat<:, Privat<:, and Other Federal Source6

There are 215,360 acres of commercial forest land in the San luis Valley (Sl V) owned by private
individuals and the State of Colorado. An estimated 519 MMB.F of sawtimber currently exists on
these lands.

The Bureau of land Management (BlM) administers approximately 7,000 acres of commercial forest
land in the SlV. Approximately 17 MMBF of this is standing sawtimber. The volume sold annually is
small, averaging 0.12 MMBF for the period 1987 to 1991. All of the BlM's commercial forest lands
are considered winter range for big-game animals; therefore, cuts are designed to enhance wildlife
use ofthese lands.

From 1987 through 1991, State lands provided 1.2 MMBF oftimber to meet local mill needs.

The lands in private ownership are not commonly managed for timber production. In the past
several years, there has been a noticeable increase in private landowners' awareness of good land
management including sustained-yield forestry. This interest is related to landowner contacts made
by personnel of the Colorado State Forest Service.

11I-38

(I ,24 51

~
