~

Management Situation by Revision Topic

Products

3J

.~,

Volumes of live timber sold annually
during the 10 yearsfrom 1985 to 1995
have ranged between 11.8 million
board feet (MMBF) and 40.3 MMBF.
The average annual volume is 28.5
MMBF. pead timber volume has
averaged 1 MMBF per year. In addition,
a few hundred thousand feet of aspen
sawtimber have been harvested each
year by c1earcutting. For the past 45
years, the volume sold averaged 19.7
MMBF per year. Figure 11I-10 displays
the historic harvest levels for the RGNF.

Post and poles, fuelwood, transplants,
and Christmas trees are also sold and
removed from the RGNF each year.
Forest-wide an average of 105
thousand board feet (MBF) of post and
poles, 4 MMBF of fuelwood, and 4,000
Christmas trees are sold and removed
annually. (Rideout and Stone, 1992)

Current management has complied
with the 1985 Forest Plan. In 1989, U.S.
District Court Judge Sherman Finesilver
mandated the ASQ be reduced to 25
MMBFper year.

Timber Volume Offer Target
and Amount Actually Sold
Rio Grande National Forest

MMBF

40

I-+-Torgot DSoId]

30

20

10

o
" ,; " " ,; " " ,; " " " ,; , " ,;

Fisal Ye.r
Figure III-g. Historic Harvest levels

D. Demand Trend6 and Timl:1er-Proce66ing Facilitie6

In December 1992, Douglas B. Rideout, Ph.D., Professor of Forest Economics at Colorado State
University, published an Administrative Studv of the Timber SUDDlv and Demand Situation of the Rio
Grande National Forest and Its Timbershed(see Appendix D). This report addressed the sawtimber
economy ofthe RGNF and its timbershed from fiscal years 1982-1991. It also assessed the sawtimber
supply, demand and economy, and the likely future under various RGNF supply levels that may result
from the Forest Plan Revision. The following information comes from this report.

5awtimbt'Jr-Dt'Jmand U:vt'J1
Rideout's report estimated the demand for timber from the RGNF and its timbershed to average
approximately 50 MMBF per year. This demand was derived from many processors, but only six
processors account for 85 percent of the annual demand.

111-35

C',2448
