Aquatic Macroinvertebrates

The composition and abundance of macroinver-
tebrates (tables 4 and 5) and the mean diversity
indices (ill shown in figure 20 indicate that pop-
ulations of organisms respond to changes in
water quality. The type, abundance, diversity,
and equitability of these organisms for each
sampling date can be seen in tables A-21
through A-33 of the appendix.

Heavy metals pollution from the Leadville Drain-
age Tunnel, California Gulch, and possibly other
downstream sources resulted in a lower (J at

sampling stations affected by these inflows.
Total abundance was also significantly reduced
below the Leadville Drain and California Gulch.
Freshening inflows resulted in a higher (J of
macroinvertebrates in the river.

Fish

Results of trout population estimates obtained
by electrofishing at selected stations are shown
in table 6. Figure 21 shows the mean heavy
metal content of brown trout ISalmo trutea)
livers taken from a subsample of fish collected at
each station (n = 6).

Table 2. - Range, mean, and standard deviation of chemical concentrations at all stations
Hardness
Sampling Number of Statistic lasCeCOJl TOS C.
