The 1970 federal census reports a total
population of 3,694 persons residing within the city limits. However,
the municipal water system serves a total population of about 6,000
persons since rural areas adjacent to the city are supplied with water
through the municipal system. The t~tal water service area is estimated
to contain about 8,400 people by 1990.
While irrigated agriculture has always been and probably will
continue to be the major industry of Delta County, coal production has
long been a major enterprise within the county. Tremendous coal reserves
exist in the northern part of the county and in the adjacent western
part of Gunnison County. Various major coal producing companies have
already acquired or are in the process of acquiring the ownership of or
leases on coal-bearing lands. It seems beyond question that coal
production in the county will increase greatly in the coming years. The
impact of this increase in coal mining activity has already been felt
within the county. Virtually all municipalities in the area are
experiencing problems with their water distribution and treatment systems,
although raw water supplies are adequate.

PROBLEH

The raw water supply of the city of Delta appears to be adequate

for the next few years.
