DEPAR~ENT OF THE <br />INTERIOR <br /> <br />,~ . l' <br />AUG-04-9B IB.Sl FROM.GRANO CANYON MRC <br /> <br />NATIONAL PARK SERVICE <br /> <br />For Immediate Release <br />m9 <br /> <br />Maureen Oltrogge (520) 638- <br /> <br />GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK TO EXTEND <br />PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD <br />ON DRAFT WILDERNESS MANAGEMENT PLAN AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT <br /> <br />Grand Canyon National Park Superintendent Robert Amberger announced today that the <br />National Park Service (NPS) would continue to accept comments on the Draft Wddemess Management <br />Plan (DWMP) and Environmental Assessment (EA) for Grand Canyon National Park for an additional 60 <br />days, through September 15, 1998. The 6O-day extension provides additional opportunity for people <br />interested in the DWMP and EA to review the documents and provide comment. <br />The purpose of the DWMP, which is a revision of the 1988 Backcol1lltty Management Plan, is to <br />guide the management of resources and visitor use in the proposed wilderness areas of Grand Canyon <br />National Park, <br />National Park SeMce Management Policies require that proposed wilderness study areas be <br />managed as designated wilderness, and that no actions be taken that would diminish wilderness suitability <br />until the legislative process for designation has been completed. <br />Issues addressed in the DWMP include: <br />. A visitor pennit and educational program, <br />. protection and monitoring of sociological. cultural and ecological resources, <br />. visitor access to wilderness including trail designation and recreational pack animal use, <br />. revegetation of damaged areas, including the restoration of abandoned landfills and primitive roads to <br />natural conditions, <br />. an ecosystem management strategy that includes cooperative partnerships with other agencies and <br />non-governmental organizations, <br />. minimum requirements standard for administrative wilderness activities, including research and fire <br /> <br />mllft'IgeIIIent. <br /> <br />The Grand Canyon National Park Enlargement Act of 1975 required the NPS to prepare a <br />wilderness recommendation for the park. The NPS submitted a wilderness proposal in 1980 and updated <br />the recommendation in 1993.
