FLAMING GORGE RESERVOIR
(GREEN RIVER)

Water Year 1991

The elew.lion of Flaming Gorge Reservoir at the beginning of
water l"'ar 1~1 was 6022.9 feet with 3,081,oooacrc,fect ofIive
storage (82 percent of capacily). Allhc end of the water l"'ar,
the elcY.:lCion was 6031.1 feet. Live: storage on September 30,
1991 was 3,390,465 aerc,fect (90 pcrccnt of capacity).

As with other drainage areas in the Upper Colorado River
Basin, precipitation in the Grecn River Basin was near
normal, but the quantityofrunoffwasreduced due to the dry
antecedent conditions of the basin. Unregulated inflow inw
Flaming Gorge Reservoir for water year l~l was 1,320,000
acre-feel, 80 percent OrnOllnal. Actual regulated inflow was
1,261,000 acre-feel.

Releases from Flaming Gorge Reservoir were maintained
above the minimum level of800 cubic feet per second for most
of water year 1991. This "'''3.S done to give
Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) more
flexibility in maintaining the power system in the ewnt of an
emergency. Even \\.illl this increase, releases from Flaming
Gorge Reservoir averaged only 1,150 cubic feet per second
for the water year. Although innow was below normal, a
modest increase in storage \1I3S realized for the reservoir
during water year 1991.

A limited number of specific releases for research and data
collection for studies concerning endangered fish survival
requirements were provided from Flaming Gorge in 1991. The
Colorado Squawfish is currently being studied as part of the
Rcco\otry Implemcnlation Program in the Upper Colorado
River Basin.

FlA\UNG GORGE RESERVOIR

Resermir

Acre-feet Elevation, feet

Storage Capacity
Rated Head
M inimUhl Powcr
Surface Area, full
Reservoir Length, full

3,749,000
1,062,000
233,000

6040
5946
5871
42,020 Acres
91 Miles

Powerplant

Number of Units
Total Capacity

3
108,000 KW

7
