~~he SJRRIP Document and the LRP both discuss the need for annual progress review. Annual
f"fesearch reports that summarize the individual studies have been completed each year of the
~-:'~rogram. In 1995 an Integration Report (Holden and Masslich 1995) was prepared that summarized
, '
dll the research activities since 1987, organized the research by LRP objective, and provided
recommendations for new areas of emphasis in the research effort. This Summary Report uses the
1995 Integration Report as a base and adds information on 1995 research activities, integration
activities in 1996, and peer review planning. The objectives ofthis report are similar to those of the
1995 report and include:

1. Develop a summary report that addresses how well the various goals of the
SJRRlP are being addressed by the biological studies being conducted under
its auspices.
2. Develop a report that presents information in a form that administrators and
nonbiologists associated with the SJRRIP will understand.
3. Provide an additional level of technical review on the biology studies being
conducted within the SJRRIP.
4. Detail proposed changes in direction by the Program, and propose changes
to the LRP, if they are needed.

The format of this report follows the outline of Section 5.0 of the LRP. Section 5.0 includes a listing
of the various objectives of the LRP and the tasks included with each objective, as well as which
tasks are milestones for the SJRRlP. Using this format for the Summary Report will allow for
conclusions to be drawn regarding where the program stands and how it is progressing.

STUDY AREA

Figure 1 shows the study area for the SJRRIP research. Most studies have been conducted in the San
Juan River from New Mexico's Navajo Reservoir to Utah's Lake Powell, although the lower end
of some tributaries(Animas River, Manco~ River) have also been included in the studies. River,
miles (RM) are shown in Figure 1 and are used in the text to locate study areas. River miles start
at 00 at the upper end of Lake Powell (mouth of Pi ute Farms Wash) and continue upriver.

DISCUSSION

This section provides discussions of the research undertaken under the SJRRIP and the results of the
research as they relate to the objectives of the LRP. The LRP includes seven objectives and
numerous tasks for meeting those objectives. Annual research reports are cited by author/year to
identify the various research studies and the data or conclusions drawn by those authors and their
research. Agency affiliations for these reports are shown in Appendix A. Many objectives include
studies that researched parts of the various tasks needed to meet the objectives. The discussions for
these objectives were created by integrating the various research studies to provide an overall view
of the progress toward meeting each objective. Other objectives have only one related study, so the
results of that study have been presented. As a general reference, Appendix B contains a table of
all the fish species that have been collected in the San Juan System and a Glossary is provided at the
end of the report.

San Juan River Recovery Implementation Program
Summary Report

2

17 January 1997
PR-576-2
