.

.

<

-3-

the study segment of the Colorado River, the Secretary of the Interior

concurred with this request. Therefore, the 22-mile segment of the

Dolores River in Utah is nOw included in our study. Since this just

occurred last month, the only progress that has been made on this

river is some initial data gathering.

Until the team has an opportunity to look at the river this spring,

no decision on eligibility can be made. If it is found to be eligible,

then we will proceed with the formulation of alternatives as we are

now doing on the Colorado River. Any recommendation we make on the

Dolores River will also include the 8-mile'portion of the river from

Gateway, Colorado, to the State line. This segment was found to be

eligible for inclusion in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System

when the rest of the Dolores River was studied in 1975. At that time

it was too short to be included in the system by itself, but the

study report recommended that it be considered if and when the Dolores

River in Utah was studied.

As mentioned earlier, there will be a series of public meetings in

April to discuss the alternatives. You will receive a notice of the

time and location in advance of those meetings.

If you have any questions or wish to express your views, please feel

free to contact one of us.

Barry Tollefson
Bureau of Outdoor
Box 253B7, Denver
Denver) Colorado
234-3523

Recreation
Federal Center
B0225

0636
