Th~ Rio Gra"d~ lorm Is th~ _lor SlIppller to Itstimbenhed. Over th~ IlUdy period It has
tNerag~d 28 MMBF per yur or 58" oltota/ timhershtd SlIpp/)'. Further, this average has Dot
rec:catly changed as aD avcrage of just the last three years shows a Rio Graade forest supply share
of 57%. This implies that the supply levels from the Rio' Grande Natioaal Forest have the poteDtial
to significantly affect the overall compositioa and level of sawtimber supply in the timbershed and
to affect the structure of the processing industr)' (eonsidered later in this repon).

I Sawtimber supply is primarily composed of spruce-fir in both the Rio Graade and its timbershed.
This is I desirable c:baracteristic for many processors because spruce saws well and can be made
ioto a variety of spccia1ty products including house logs.

. Over the ten year period, sawtimber supply levels have been remarbbly coosistalt 011 the Bi2
Gl2IIde National Forest. This is unusual. Most forests will have either volatile supply levels or
receatl)' declining supply levels. Coasistent supply levels allow industry (1arse and small) to more
efficiently manage loa inventories, and volumes under coatract, and to more efficieatly plan for
capital improvemeats to processing &cilities.

. Over th~ tM ~ar perWd, slIWIlmher SIIpp/y from th~ timhenlt~d has tn1ertIgu 49 MMBF per
ICor ."d has bUll somewhlll $Iab/e. n~ .",,"a/ tNer.g~ lor th~ last thre~,un In the $Il1dy
period (FY '91 to FY '.9) was 53 MMBF. 'Ibe IVCI'I&e i:hanae in supply 1evel from OIIe year to
the next has been about 21%. Much of this consisteacy in timbershed supply comes from the
coos.
