"v

Regional Goal - Provide for multiple
uses and sustainability of National
Forests and Grasslands in an
environmentally acceptable manner.

. This goal responds to concems about
providing a commitment to multiple-use
management while increasing the
environmental sensitivity with which
commodities are produced. In supporting
the principles of multiple-use. more
attention will be given to sustainable forest
and grassland ecosystems which in tum
sustain long-term productivity. Attention
is focused on providing an acceptable
combination of resources and
management practices. including the
amount of clearcutting and road
construction; the management of livestock
grazing; mine waste clean-up; mined land
reclamation; and the control of undesirable
weeds, insects. and plant diseases,

Regional' Goal Emphasize
cooperation with individuals.
organizations., and other agencies in
coordination of planning and project
implementationo

. This goal responds to concems about
cooperation with the public and Forest
Service partners. We need to emphasize
cooperation to make planning and project
implementation successful. In particular.
there are concems about improving
cooperation on catastrophic wildland fires.
livestock grazing, big-game populations
and habitat. recreation needs. maintaining
scenery. the changing use of resources. and
working with present and future
commodity users.

Appendix A

Forest Plan Goals

. Manage all vegetation types outside of wilderness to provide
multiple-use benefits commensurate with land capability and
resource demand.

. Integrate vegetation treatment with resource management in
all areas - range. recreation, timber. water, and wildlife,

. Maintain the wilderness character of Wilderness and Geologic
Study Areas as required by Cong~ in the Colorado
Wilderness Act of 1980 (PL 96-560),

. Manage wilderness to preserve the wilderness character. and
provide for human use and enjoyment '

. Increase winter range carrying capacity for deer and elk.

. Provide livestock grazing and gradual increases in stocking
levels until maximum grazing capacity is reached,

. Manage lands suitable for timber production to provide
roundwood and sawtimber volume above the present level.

. Replace stagnant lodgepole-pine stands with new vigorous
stands,

. Increase the availability of fuelwood,

. Encourage mineral exploration, development, and extraction
consistent with management of surface resources,

. Protect surface resources and environmental quality in
accordance with laws and regulations,

. Prevent and control insect infestation and disease.

Forest Plan Goals

. Cooperate with the appropriate jurisdiction In providing
community stability and cohesion within the Human Resource
Units on the Rio Grande National Forest,

,
\

('J25i~9

.(

A-2

c
