Scientists may not know until next
year. But after a three-day trip down the river, early signs look
positive
Story by Mark Havnes

H.A;\iU c,\:\YO;\i :\ATlO:\AL '.,\RK - Yes, flushing out the Colorado River
may help rebuild shrinking sandbars. Yes, it may replenish endangered fish.
And, yes. it may rejuvenate the sensitive Grand Canyon ecosystem.
But there may be an even more langible reason for unleashing 224.000 acre-
t~et of water from Lake Powell over 21/2 days. as river stewards did last
week.
"It's aboulthe people," said Kanab river guide Arthur Thcvimn.
More Ihan 22.000 visilOrs gel drenched every year riding the river's roller-
coaster currents through Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona. So
anything lhat buoys lip those boat lrips will intlate public and privale colTers,
The ri\.cr runners already pump more than $20 million a year mto the area's
economy.
But did the Greal Gush of 2004 . unlike a previous attempt in 1996 _
accomplish its miSSIon'! Scienlists won'l know for sure until nc.xI year. But
initial signs arc encouraging as the waler begins to recede.
"AnccdolalmfonnatlOn is coming back thai we arc seeing sand on beaches
Ihal could serve as a basis for !ish habitat and a healthy ecosystem." said JelT
Cross. direclor of lhe Gmnd Canyon's Science Center for Natural and Cultural
Resources.
Crews have begun gathering data from 22 experimenls along the n\'er. Afier
the Sunday-through-Tucsday waler release, thc Nallonal Park Sl'rvice tilled
three pontoon boats with scienllsts, oOicials. reporters and photographers for a
threc.day Inp down thc river - from Lce's Ferry, Ariol.. to just easl of l.ake
~tead -to check on lhose e.xperiments.
Scientists hope 10 re-eslablish the shriveling sandbars to creale backwaters
for endangered fish like Ihe humpback chub and give lhrill-seeking n\"er
runners more places to camp. dry ofr and soak 10 the grandeur of the Grand
Canyon.
Those sandbars have bct.'Il \.anishing because Glen Canyon Pam lraps 92
percenl oflhe sand and sclhmenllhat would nonnally now down the river.

hup:l/www.sltrih.com/utah/ci _ 24 7 5618

$t Gas GUI

Researc
gas
prices...

TITANI

1111 'R'IL\~ T 1\/111\1

...-.---..

now open
!i,r a limite
engagemer.

11129/2004
