29

004~

PART VII
MUNICIPAL-INDUSTRIAL WATER POSSIBILITIES

A very preliminary operation study of Syracuse Reservoir was

made on the basis of supplying 18,000 acre-feet annually (1,500
acre-feet per month) for municipal and industrial uses only. The

.

study indicated that with the reservoir, a dependable water supply

could be made available for this purpose for use at any location

below the reservoir. Runoff from the two principal tributary

streams, Pawnee River and Walnut Creek, could provide water for

municipal and industrial use if suitable regulation is provided.

Kansas area above Ellinwood

The present needs of the communities in the Arkansas Basin

in Kansas above Ellinwood for municipal and industrial water can

generally be satisfied from ground water sources. If future needs

exceed the ground water capacity, water stored in Syracuse Reservoir

could be released to meet these requirements.

Wichita area

Water supply for the Wichita area could be supplemented by

diversion of surplus water from the Ari<ansas River Basin if the

water is proved to be suitable for municipal and industrial use.

Several alcernate diversion routes are shown on exhibit 9.

The diversion farthest upstream could divert from the Arkansas

River about eight miles east of Dodge City. A canal flowing in a

southeasterly direction about 24 miles would discharge into a small

tributary of Rattlesnake Creek about six miles northeast of the town

of Bucklin. Rattlesnake Creek could be used as a carrier to a point

about nine miles upstream from St. John. From here a canal about 15

miles long could convey vhe water to the North Fork of the Ninnescah

River about eight miles south and two miles west of Stafford. Final
