Sites are available only

where the stream valleys are wide. In most instances the valuable

improvements and high value agricultural lands inundated would

probably offset the benefits obtainable. A reconnaissance study
of these basins was made by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1942 and
1943. l/

Two sites are available in the Pawnee drainage. Burdett

Damsi te No. 1 on Pawnee River about 2 miles west of Burdett, Kansas

at the confluence of Pawnee and Buckner Creeks and Burdett site No.

2 about 5.5 miles west of Burdett on Pawnee Creek. The capacity of
each of these sites is about 6,000 acre-feet if limited to channel

storage and about 29,000 acre-feet with inundation of farm lands.

In the Walnut Creek drainage three storage sites could be

considered. Ness City reservoir site on North Walnut Creek just

above Ness City. This site would have a capacity of about 50,000

acre-feet with 2,700 acres inundated. Bazine Damsite No.1 about

5 miles above the town of Bazine is below the confluence of North

and South Walnut Creeks and would have a capacity of about 31,000

acre-feet with 1,900 acres inundated. Bazine Site No. 2 about 2.5
miles below Bazine would inundate 6,400 acres with a capacity of
128,000 acre-feet.

Y Unpublished Project Planning Report No. 88 dated
September 1943 "Reconnaissance, Pawnee River and Walnut Creek
Basins, Kansas".
