f,\

o
o
CoO
~.

Wetland creation and enhancement efforts are rarely 100 percent successful and wetlands do
not cover an entire parcel of land. An adequate supply of water to support design features
needs to be assured prior to acquisition of land interests. To estimate acreage requirements,
the team assumed three acres of land interests would be needed to replace each acre of
wetland loss. Because of the variable quality of prism habitat, the team assumed replacement
on an acre-by-acre basis. Habitat replacement recommendations for the 212 habitat units
total 1,370 acres. The team also assumed three saplings would need to be transplanted for
each lost cottonwood tree. This would require a nursery supply of about 2,250 trees.

Habitat Wetland , Prism Total Totai
Lateral System Units -- Acres" Acres Acres Trees
South (A) 81.0 511.5 37.2 .-548.7 1,383
Loutzenhizer (D) 18.1 86.4 17.3 103.7 138
Selig (E) 68.2 430.5 28.2 458.7 492
East (G) 43.0 219.0 33.5 252.5 234
Gamet (H) 2.3b --- 5.9 5.9 3
Total 212.6 1,247.4 122.1 1,369.5 2,250

Table 5 - Habitat Replacement ~imates per Lateral System

. For the East Side Laterals Project, Reclamation
completed a biological assessment (1993). It evaluates the potential occurrence and impacts
to the following threatened or endangered species: bald eagle (recently downlisted), peregrine
falcon, whooping crane, black-footed ferret, Colorado squawfish, bonytail chub, humpback
chub, razorback sucker, Uinta Basin hookIess cactus, spineless hedgehog cactus, clay-loving
wild buckwheat, and Ute ladies'-tresses. Plant species that are candidates for listing under
the Endangered Species Act also were evaluated: adobe penstemon (also known as adobe
beardtongue), adobe desert parsley (also known as Colorado desert parsley), and Wetherill

21
