The endangered and protected native fish of the
Colorado River Basin have a true friend in Robert
(Bob) Williams, fishery biologist and researcher.
Bob currently serves as senior staff biologist for
the Bureau of Reclamation in Salt Lake City.
Not your typical "white-collar" federal
employee, Bob can usually be found somewhere
on the Green, Yampa, Colorado or San Juan river
wearing a red bandanna on his head as he seines
backwaters, electro-fishes shallow shorelines or
measures habitats used by native fish.
Bob can occasionally be caught in the office --
wearing a tie when he needs a favor -. preparing
work statements for any of almost a dozen
contracts he oversees as pan of the Recovery
Implementation Program. He serves as
Reclamation's technical representative on almost $2
million worth of endangered fish studies
throughout the Upper Basin and into the Grand
Canyon.
Starting with the Endangered Species office of
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1978, Bob
gained an extensive knowledge of the legal
requirements as well as the biological intent of the
Endangered Species Act In late 1980 Bob moved
to Reclamation where he now provides infonnation
on the fishes' habitat requirements and suggestions
on implementing necessary water development
plans and programs while still protecting the
species.
Bob coaches his daughter's baseball team and
is best known as a patient father. His colleagues
describe him as hard-working, fun-loving and
Bob's only down side is that he is difficult to
contact. And when he's in the office, he is usually
on the phone. In spite of that, Bob is well-liked
and well-respected in the Upper Colorado region.
On behalf of the Recovery Implementation
Committee and its various work groups, I would
like to thank Bob for his continued interest beyond
the job in protecting the endangered fish of the
Colorado River Basin.
