The Wolford Mountain Project is a dam,
reservoir, and associated facilities
under construction on Muddy
Creek, approximately five miles
north of Kremmling. The Colorado
River Water Conservation District
will own and operate the reservoir. Ground breaking occurred on August 26,
1993. Construction will occur over the following two and a half years. The
reservoir is expected to fill in one to two years following completion and
testing of the dam.

Project costs are estimated at $47 million, including feasibility, design,
permitting, engineering, environmental compliance, land purchase, highway
relocation, and dam construction. Funding is from a $10.2 million legal
settlement with the Northern Colorado River Water Conservancy District, a
lease-purchase. with the Denver Water Department for a portion of the
reservoir's water, and a loan from the state Water Conservation Board. Lease
payments from Denver will provide the revenues necessary for repayment of
the state loan. No tax revenues will be required for construction financing.

Recreation facilities will be constructed as part of the permanent facilities
associated with the reservoir. Recreation amenities will include a boat ramp,
parking, a picnic/day use area, and a 25-unit overnight camping area.
Facilities for the physically challenged will be included.

Wolford Mountain Reservoir will be stocked by the Colorado Division of
Wildlife, providing both summer and ice fishing opportunities. Additionally,
the Colorado River District has committed to work with the Division of
Wildlife to establish a fishery downstream of the dam's outlet works. Trout
are expected to be the primary catch in this area. Separate trail access will
be developed to this area.

Big game habitat improvements on the east side of the reservoir will be
designed to reduce big game movement across Colorado Highway 40 and the
reservoir. Existing wetlands will be enhanced and new wetlands created
downstream of the dam to replace stream-side wetlands which will be
underwater.

FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CONTACT: CHRIS TREESE,
Colorado River District
945-8522
