<br />the damsite to a perenniel status. Public Law 93-621 of January 3, 1975 <br />provides that the Dolores River below McPhee Damsite shall be studied <br />and a determination made by Jenuary 3, 1976 as to whether it will <br />qualify for a designation under the Wild snd Scenic Rivers System. <br />Storage releases from the reservoir will greatly enhance scenic, fishery <br />and recreation values and should assist in making that reach of straam <br />qualify for a designation. <br /> <br />PROPOSED PLAN OF DEVELOPMENT <br /> <br />Primary regulation of the Dolores River would be provided at the 381,100 <br />acre-foot McPhee Reservoir which would be formed on the river at the <br />eastern edge of the project area by McPhee Dem end Great Cut Dike. <br />Municipel and industrial storage for the town of Dove Creek would be <br />provided at the 690 ecre-foot Monument Creek Reservoir located et an <br />offstream site in the Dove Creek area. <br /> <br />On the recommendation of the Fish and Wildlife Service, several measures <br />are planned for wildlife management. A reservoir is to be constructed <br />at Dawson Draw in the Montezume Valley aree for the enhancement of <br />waterfowl. This reservoir would also provida opportunities for fishing, <br />boating and picnicking. Also, an area near the existing Totten Lake <br />would be developed by construction of dikes to provide increased nesting <br />areas for weterfowl. Dawson Draw Reservoir and Totten Lake would re- <br />ceive a combined average of approximately 800 acre-feet of project <br />water annually from McPhee Reservoir through existing facilities. Pro- <br />ject funds would be provided for acquisition and improvement of lend <br />north and east of the Dolores River for winter range to mitigate big <br />game habitat losses caused by the project. <br /> <br />Project water would be distributed by a canal and lateral systam con- <br />structed as part of the project and by enlargement of part of the <br />existing system of the Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company. The DQve <br />Creek Canal would be the major project canal. It would receive water <br />pumped from McPhee Reservoir at Great Cut Dike by the Great Cut Pumping <br />Plant and extend about 54 miles northwest to Monument Creek Reservoir. <br />Other project conveyance facilities would include the South Canal, a <br />branch of the Dove Creek Canal; the Dolores Tunnel, extending from <br /> <br />6 <br />
