Assessment of whether water conservation measures, other efficiency measures, <br />or operational changes could make water available: <br /> <br />I) Opportunities for "saving" water: <br /> <br />. As part of the Colorado River Water Quality Improvement Program, about <br />28 miles ofthe Project distribution system will be lined to reduce the <br />amount of water lost through seepage. Construction will begin in fiscal <br />year 1997. See the Salinity Control Section for details. <br /> <br />. Approximately 75 percent of Project farmland is currently under sprinkler <br />irrigation. Conversion of the remaining farmland to sprinklers irrigation <br />would reduce the water diversion requirements. Because much of the <br />Project land is divided into small tracts, implementing typical outdoor <br />urban/suburban water conservation measures such as efficient lawn <br />sprinklers or xeroscaping would reduce the amount of water used. <br /> <br />2) How much: <br /> <br />. About 5,600 acre-feet of water will be "saved" annually by lining <br />distribution system. There are no estimates of the amount of water which <br />could be saved by conversion of the remaining farm land to sprinkler <br />irrigation or other conservation measures. <br /> <br />3) When <br /> <br />. The water "saved" by lining the distribution system will be available during <br />the historic irrigation season after construction is complete. The estimated <br />completion date is the fall of2003. Much of the water that is currently lost <br />through seepage from the canal system returns to the San Juan River and is <br />presently available for use.
