Figure 6 shows the results of the application of the Trading
Post hydrograph to the Strawn reservoir. The inflow and outflow
curves show how the reservoir would function in absorbing the peak
inflow and extending the duration of outflow for different degrees of
regulation. The Storage-Time curves show the volume of storage re-
quired to control discharge from the reservoir to different maximum
amounts. It is shown that a storage capacity of 754,000 acre-feet
is required in the Strawn reservoir to reduce the discharge of the
Trading Post flood from 120,000 to 20,000 cubic feet per second. The
extent to which less storage capacity affords a lesser degree of regu-
lation is also indicated by results of computations showing that
with storage of 617,000 acre-feet, the flood peak can be reduced to
30,000 cubic feet per second and with 516,000 acre-feet it can be
limited to only 40,000 cubic' feet per second. The degree of regula-
tion which may be justified depends on economic factors and re-
mains to be determined.

Other Reservoirs

Another reservoir site on the Neosho river above Council Grove
is being studied by the War Department and appears to have a
great deal of merit. The dam site is located in sections 2 and 10,
T. 16 S., R. 8 E., below Munkers creek, within a mile.upstream from
Council Grove. Here, a dam storing water to a depth of 48 feet at
the dam site, would create a reservoir of about 5,000 acres surface
area with a capacity of nearly 100,000 acre-feet. In addition to
providing flood protection to Council Grove and a substantial part
of the river below, this reservoir would be extremely useful in sup-
plying water' to sustain stream flow. It appears that this project
should definitely be a unit of any plan of development for the
Neosho basin.
Two other sites which have been given some consideration by the
War Department are on the Cottonwood river above the mouth of
the South Cottonwood river near Marion and. on Cedar creek near
Cedar Point. Neither of these sites appeared to be very promising.
Consequently, the Division of Water Resources has made surveys of
alternate sites in each instance, which are to be given further study.
On Cedar creek a site has been selected about a mile farther up-
stream, and at Marion consideration is being given to a location

~~d:~:(.;i:;';::>;:;;'< ·

.. ...:<.......

.
