.

SECRETARY SEATON'S DECISION CONCERNING
COLORADO RIVER STORAGE PROJECT ELECTRIC
TRANSMISSION SYSTEM IS VITAL TO WATER
INTERESTS

L. M. Alexander, Assistant General Manager
Salt River Project, Phoenix, Arizona

Ladies and Gentlemen, I bring you greetings from Arizona--
from the Colorado River Basin Consumers Power, Inc. and from my
own organization, The Salt River Project.

,

To you of the upper basin of the Colorado River, the Colorado
River Storage Project probably means water, water to grow new crops,
to stabilize existing agriculture and underpin your whole economy,
just as water has done for others - -my own Salt River Project for in-
stance--and it means power to pay the bill.

"

To Lower Basin water and power users it means further con-
trol of the treacherous and silt-laden Colorado River. It means inte-
gration of power facilities, It means power, and it sets a pattern for
complete development of the river--a pattern even for water projects
of interest to areas outside of the river basin.

The storage project should then raise questions in your mind
as to how you, you, and you, who are in the dynamic middle of this
vast overall project, will best benefit from it, how you can expedite
construction of needed projects, and how you, as a benefactor, will
share in the costs.

,
.

Despite what so many people have been led to believe, reclama-
tion projects such as the Colorado River Storage Project do not come
for free. They must be paid foruwith appropriate interest too, and
you will pay the bill.

Are you interested?

The other day at Occidental College I heard a professor say
that to him a liberal education was one wherein the student was re-
quired to seek the truth of a matter-,-no matter where that truth lies.

Even if I don't succeed in relating the Storage Project to your
own self-interest, maybe I can give you some facts to help you seek
the truth.

- 1 -
\
