ized participating proj ects.

Construction of nO-foot Glen Canyon Dam is about one-third
complete, although only about 160,000 cubic yards of concrete have
been placed at the dam and another 100,000 cubic yards in the power-
house. Completion of the dam is now scheduled for June 1965, and
the first production of hydroelectric power is expected in 1964.

Construction at Flaming GOl'ge Dam is also about one -third
complete, Concrete emplacement there will be resumed at full scale
early next April, and the first power production at this unit is planned
for 1963, '

Work under the prime contract at Navajo Dam is well ahead
of schedule and nearly 70 percent complete, More than 16 million
cubic yards of earth and rock fill have been placed in the dam struc-
ture, which we expect to be completed in 1962. There is no power-
plant at this installation, but penstocks are included in the structure
for possible later development of a power supply,

The -Secretary's supplemental report and certification of econ-
omic justification for the fourth Colorado River storage unit- -Curecanti--
was transmitted to the Congress in July 1959. Funds to start construc-
tion of this unit were provided for the current fiscal year, and relocation
of highways through the Blue Mesa Reservoir site is already underway.
We hope to advertise the prime contract for construction of Blue Mesa
Dam by the spring of 1962. This will be an earth-and rock-fill structure,
with a 60,000 -kilowatt powerplant. A major road relocation will be
started this fiscal year.

Remarkable progress has been made on these four key storage
units, which will provide the river regulation and carryover storage
necessary to make possible the ultimate development and consumptive
use of water in the upper basin, and, at the same time, assure the Com-
pact commitments will be fulfilled.

Construction on the authorized participating projects has been
undertaken just as rapidly as definite plan studies could be finished, re-
ports issued, and Congressional appropriations obtained. Stanaker Dam
on the Vernal Unit of the Central Utah Project is nearly completed, and
the diversion dam and feeder canal will be in operation next spring, Con-
struction of theStanaker Service Canal will be under contract early in
1961, so that the much needed supplemental water will soon be available
to the farmers on the 14,700 acres of land in the Ashley Valley.

- 19 -
