2. Quality of water must meet basic requirements.
a. be in the proper temperature range [20-300C] and
growing season [120 days].
b. have at least 7 ppm O2, pH 7-9.
,c. be relatively free of contaminents: H2S, Mn, heavy metals,
which would be harmful to fish; Silt, sand, fish, and
disease organisms.

3. Gravity supply is preferred to pumping.

4. More than a single source of water is preferred, i.e. spring water,
well water, etc.

B. Land Needs

1. The site should be in federal or state ownership or be otherwise
attainable, and the present use of the land should not conflict
with its use for a fish hatchery.

2. At least [50 acres] should be available.

3. Topography should be near level, but with enough elevation for
good drainage, so ponds can be drained completely and emptied
of fish with relative ease and speed. Raceways would have
to have 18 inches of fall between them and enough slope for
cleaning.

4. The site must be amenable to construction for pond culture,
soil should hold water very well and have a high clay content
or clay subsoil. For raceway culture, rocky soil or marsh
should be avoided.

C. Location

1. The hatchery site should be located centrally in the Upper
Colorado River Basin, within the historical range of the
Colorado River endangered fishes, preferably where they still occur.

2. The hatchery site should be accessible throughout the year in
all kinds of weather, be within 50 miles of goods and services and
have telephone communications available.

3. The local community should have housing available for workers.

D~ Economics

1. Construction, operation, and maintenance costs should be the
most economical,' provided fishery management requirements
can be met as well.
a. Life span of facilities should be considered and future
replacement costs calculated.
b. Operating and maintenance costs should be determined.
