I'll:)

.

.

WATER QUALITY

The water quality standards adopted by Colorado in January

1974 classify the waters of the Dolores River B-1, or water which is

suitable for cold water fishery, above the town of Dolores. From

Dolores to the state line the waters are classified, B-2 or water

which is suitable for warm water fishery. The water quality of

the Dolores River presently meets the state's standards, except

for the reach from the confluence with the San Miguel River to

the stateline.

The water quality of the Dolores is affected by natura 1

causes and the activities of man in the basin. Three factors

associated with water quality in the river are dissolved solids

suspended sediment, and pollution from industrial and human con-

taminates. Parameters associated with these three factors are

monitored by several state and federal governmental agencies.

The existing and potential water quali ty problems of the Dolores

River are along the main stem. The West Dolores River is un-

affected by municipal or industrial discharges or irrigation

return flows to diminish its water quality. There are several

campgrounds along the West Dolores, and although no data are

available, their wastes should not have a significant impact on

water quality.

Municipal waste sources

SmaIl municipalities located along the reaches of river
that have been designated for study under P.L. 93-621 treat

09./
1
