.

.

.

001181

Annual streamflow values were indexed in order of magnitude from 0,5 to 1.2,
with 1,0 representing the mean. It was assumed that irrigation efficiency
during years with high streamflow, would be less than during years with low
streamflow. To account for this, the streamflow values with the lower indexes
were weighted. The average growing season length, based on estimates from the
Enoineerino Advisory Commission's Reoort, 1948, and the UODer Colorado Reoion
ComDrehensive Framework Study. 1971, was adjusted yearly by the streamflow
index. As a result, the len9th of the growing season yaries from year to
year.

Because the census acreage data did not reflect shortages for irrigated crops,
adjustment percentages were applied to the full season alfalfa and pasture
acreage figures to obtain short and full supply acreage estimates, The
percentages used were based primarily on information in the Enoineerino
Advisory Commission's ReDort, 1948, and the UDDer Colorado Reoion
ComDrehensiye Framework Studv, 1971, This shortage percentage is constant and
does not vary from year to year. The shortage percentages for each sub-basin
in the Gunnison River Drainage Area are shown in Table 3.

Incidental ConsumDtive Use

The total depletion attributed to irrigation includes not only the direct use
from irrigated crops but also other uses incidental to the irrigated crops,
seeped areas, and phreatophytes. These losses, which were estimated in the
UDDer Colorado Reoion ComDrehensive Framework Studv. 1971, were assumed to
vary directly with irrigated acreage. Incidental use for 1965 was estimated
using depletions and acreage figures from ]965. An incidental use was
presented as a percentage of the depletions (or crop consumptive use) and
based on the total irrigated acreage of the sub-basin. A different rate was
calculated for each sub-basin; this rate did not vary from year to year.
Incidental use rates for each sub-basin in the Gunnison River Drainage Area
are shown in Table 3,
