POTENTIAL CROP CONSUMPTIVE USE

The total potential consumptive use under the Keesee Ditch was based on the

assumption that there were 1,400 acres irrigated. This figure of 1,400 acres

was used because that is the decreed figure, even though it is recognized that

approximately 2,000 acres have been irrigated for many years. All of the land

under the Keesee Ditch is owned by one individual, who reported that the crop

mix under, the ditch has been 70% alfalfa, 10% corn, 10% wheat, and 10% milo.

In order to determine the consumptive use under the ditch, the modified

Blaney-Criddle method was used to calculate the potential consumptive use by

each of the crops 1 isted above for the period 1970-1979. The modified Blaney-

Criddle methoq is the standard method for making such calculations in this area.

Appendix I is 'a copy of the computer printout sheets for these calculations.

CONCLUSIONS

In order ,to determine the appropriate method for calculating the historic

consumptive use under the Keesee Ditch, a comparison was made between the poten-

tial consumptive use of the irrigated crops and the irrigation del ivery or

amount of water available for those crops to use. This comparison was made for

the period 1970-1979. Table I I is a tabulation of the potential consumptive

use values and the irrigation del ivery values for each month during those years.

As can be seen from the total values for each year on Table I I. the amount

of water available to the crops ("delivery") is generally somewhat different

than the full needs or potential consumptive use of the crops. Since the crops

cannot use more water than is available or more than the potential consumptive

use. the actual consumptive use in each year is equal to the lesser of the two

total values for that year. The average actual consumptive use for the period

1970-1979 is 2.910 acre-feet (Table I I). Applying the ratio between this number

and the average diversions by the Keesee Ditch in the period 1970-1979

(4.992 acre-feet) to the average diversions by the ditch in the period 1950-1980

(4,454 acre-feet) the average actual consumptive use for the period 1950-1980 is

calculated to 'be 2.596 acre-feet.

- 3 -
