If the <br />~ <br />en water contains excessive chlorides and sUlfates, corrosion <br /> <br />may replace scaling as the undersirable mechanism. Salts of <br /> <br />these ions are more difficult and more expensive to control. <br /> <br />The U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, <br /> <br />Public Health Service, has published standards applicable to <br /> <br />drinking water and water supply systems used by public carriers <br />and other subject to Federal quarantine regulations. The recom- <br /> <br />mended upper limit of total dissolved solids is placed at 500 <br /> <br /> <br />parts per million (6). The National Technical Advisory Sub- <br /> <br />committee on Public Water Supplies in its report to the Secretary <br /> <br />of the Interior, has expanded upon the Public Health Service's <br />Regulations with respect to drinking water standards. The <br />Subcommittee prepared an in-depth review and reported its findings <br /> <br />and recommendations regarding water quality for Recreation and <br /> <br />Aesthetics, Public Water Supplies, Fish, Other Aquatic Life and <br /> <br />Wildlife, Agricultural' uses including Farmstead Water Supplies, <br />Livestock and Irrigation, and Industry (7). <br /> <br />25 <br /> <br />,,_ ,4; <br /> <br />
