The land-form of the South Plains is virtually featureless,

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
-

*
after 1875."

so flat that one believes he can see the curvature of the earth as

his gaze sweeps across the horizon. In the nine counties, this

flatness is broken only by a small sandhills or dune-like area in

Lamb County and by a minor canyon called Yellowhouse Draw which

extends southwestward through Lubbock, affording some pleasant

terra i n for the 1 argest Ci to' Park in Texas. Other\'li se, the deep

red-brown soils stretch from east to west in an imperceptible up-

Lubbock County, named after a Confederate Colonel, was created
in 1875, but it was not "organized" until 1891. Lynn, Lamb, Hockley,

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

ward tilt between elevations 3100 and 3550 feet above sea level,
a uniform slope of about 4.5 feet per mile. The courthouse in
Crosby ton to the east is at elevation 3108; the courthouse in
Leve11and, some 70 miles west, is at elevation 3523. To the south

and east, the Llano Estacado breaks sharply at the Cap Rock

Escarpment marking the end of the High Plains and the beginnin9 of

the Rolling Prairies. This feature also marks the end of ground-

water and rich soil, the beginning of rough pasture-land with a

heavy overstory of mesquite that covers much of Garza and some of

Crosby and Floyd Counties. (See also Map IV-5 on page IV-26.)

Hale, Garza, Crosby, Floyd and Terry Counties were all created by

the Texas Legislature in the same year out of the Bexar Territory.

*Crosby County Program Committee.
