~
CD
CD
o

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The authors arc grateful for the assistance of a number of people who gave generously of time
and expertise during this research. Everyone interviewed took time and care in answering ques
tions and searching out information. However, certain people dcserve special thanks.

Ernest M. Weber, Colorado River Board of California, not only provided advice and guidance
but became so interested in the study that he pursued individual research that is renected in the
discussion of Colorado River hardness. He also supplied information and interpretations to the
Colorado River Salinity Control Forum Work Group and to the Colorado River Water Ouality
Office, USBR, which greatly assisted the conduct of this study.

j, Andrew Schlange, Manager of the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority, spent nearly two
days opening the workings, history, and plans of his Agency to this study,

Members of the three California Regional Water Ouality Control Boards covered by this study
devoted time and thought to our queries on several occasions. In particular, we thank Jim Bcn-
nett from Riverside, Ladin Delaney from San Diego, and Dcnnis Dasker from Los Angeles.

Tim Henley and Steve Olson of Arizona's Department of Water Resourccs dcveloped contacts
and set meetings for us in Phoenix and Tucson.

George Blake of thc Colorado River Commission of Nevada provided a comprehensive list of
contacts and suggestions for interviews in the Las Vegas Valley.

Staff of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, listed in Appendix B, contri-
buted many hours to seek answers to our questions.

Staff and officials of the City of San Diego and the San Diego Water Authority spent extra time
and effort on this project.

The Colorado River Water Quality Office, our sponsor, was consistently helpful and responsive
to requests for information.

Finally, the authors wish to thank everyone not mentioned by name for their time, effort, and
courtesy. As usual, those with information are unfailingly willing to share it. For this we are
especially grateful.

ix
