M

..

March 1973

SUMMARY SHEET

Basalt Project, Colorado

LOCATION

The beautiful Roaring Fork Valley provides the setting for the Basalt
Project near the towns of Basalt and Carbondale. Larger trade centers
adjacent to the project are the cities of Glenwood Springs and Aspen.
The project touches corners of three counties, Garfield, Pitkin, and
Eagle.

CURRENT STATUS

Feasibility studies are nearing completion.

The feasibility report will be completed in FY 1974.

Funding
General investigations
Contributed funds
Total

$568,932
62.370
$631,302

PROJECT PLAN

The Basalt Project would provide municipal and domestic water to assist
in the orderly development of the rapidly growing Roaring Fork Valley
and irrigation water for privately owned ranchette and farm lands in the
area.

Water would be made available by storage releases from the existing Ruedi
reservoir, a feature of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project, on the Fryingpan
River and from water exchanges along Cattle, Mesa, and Coulter Creeks.
The storage water would be conveyed from the reservoir to municipal and
domestic treatment plants and to the Landis Canal by the Landis Pipeline.
The water would be distributed to the Roaring Fork Valley between the
town of Carbondale and a point upstream about midway between the towns
of Aspen and Basalt by three separate municipal and domestic trunklines.
The Landis Canal would also convey municipal and domestic water to the
Colorado Mountain College area. Terminal storage, treatment, and further
distribution of all the municipal and domestic water would be the respons-
ibility of its users.

The Landis Canal would also convey irrigation water to the elevated ter-
races and valleys north of the Roaring Fork River between Basalt and
