)

00
CoJ
LI'J

2.2.4 Effects of Elkhead Creek Reservoir

Simulated reservoir operation studies

were conducted independently by the

Yampa Project participants and the Colorado

Water Conservation Board. These studies

indicated that low flow conditions

requiring release of water for the

project could be expected to occur

during the months of JulY through Octo-

ber in exceptionally dry years. Calcula-

tions to determine the required water

storage were based on the lowest recorded

flow of the Yampa River - 1934. The

additional volume of water impounded

by the higher dam will exceed the minimum

storage requirements for the two r,enerating

units, and could provide a portion of

the requirements for two additional units.

Maximum drawdown of the reservoir for

plant operation is expected to occur

approximately once every 30 years, for

about a 3.3 percent chance of occurring

In any ~iven year. In such cases, this

maximum drawdown could occur over a period

of up to four months duration. Partial

-148-
