<br />Active field studies were completed in the Lake Plain area of the Oahe
<br />Unit (Spink, Brown, Marshall, and Day Countiesl S. Dak.), in the North Loup
<br />irrigation project (Elyria to Fullerton, Nebr. J, and in the upper part of the
<br />st. George Unit (Kansas River valley between Wamego and Kiro, Kans.). A
<br />field draft of a report on each area has been completed, or nearly so. Field
<br />studies ,rere continued in the Two Medicine irrigation project (Glacier County,
<br />Mont.), the Hardin irrigation unit (Big Horn County, Mont.), the Greybull
<br />Valley-Emblem Bench-YO Bench area (Park and Big Horn Counties, Wyo.), and the
<br />upper South Platte River valley (Denver to Hardin, COlo.). In addition, an,
<br />estimate was made of' underflow beneath the Wyoming-Nebraska state line within
<br />the Niobrara River drainage basin.

<br />Measurements were made of' the water level in observation wells in the
<br />Angostura irrigation project area, in the vicinity of' the Fort Randall Dam,
<br />in the Oshe Unit, and in the Crow Creek,.Sand Lake area (all in South Dakota);
<br />in the Ainsworth irrigation project, in the lower Niobrara River drainage
<br />basin, the Elkhorn River and Loup River drainage basins, the lower Platte
<br />River valley, and in the Platte-Republican upland area (all in Nebraska); and
<br />in the Bost'ficlt, Cedar Bluff, Glen Elder, Kanopolis, Kirwin, Webster, and
<br />Wilson Units (all in Kansas). The measurements made in 1956 in Nebraska were
<br />released in a mimeographed report and those in Kansas in a bulletin of' the
<br />Kansas Geological,Survey.

<br />The review of manuscript reports was continued. Five reports were
<br />published as water-supply papers, and at the' end of' the fiscal year seven
<br />other reports were in the process of publication. An additionsl six reports
<br />were apj)Toved fOT publication (one as a bulletin of the Kansas GeOlogical
<br />Survey) .

<br />Other ground-water studies were made in the Missouri Basin states as part
<br />of the State-Federal cooperative program. These studies included an inventory
<br />of selected artesian wells in South Dakota and considerable test drilling in
<br />North Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. Areal studies were completed in part of
<br />Musselshell and Golden Valley Counties, Mont., in Kidder County, N. Dak., in
<br />the Belle Fourche and Little Missouri River basins in Wyoming, and in Fillmore
<br />County, Nebr. A field draft of a report on Mitchell County, Kans., also was
<br />completed. Near the end of the fiscal year, field studies were begun in
<br />Blaine County, Hont.
