<br />Non-native fish control on the Gunnison River <br /> <br />This involves a three-year effort to evaluate the effectiveness of removing non-native fish <br />such as northern pike, largemouth bass and green sunfish from the Gunnison River, To <br />locate these sport-fIsh, biologists will use a fish species inventory of the Gunnison that <br />showed the times of year when these fish are concentrated in certain areas. Biologists will <br />capture the fIsh using trammel nets, trap-nets and "electro-fishing" - a technique that <br />involves running an electrical current through the water to temporarily stun the fish and bring <br />them to the surface. The non-native fish will be removed from the river alive then <br />transported to other waters for sport-ftshing purposes. Removal efforts will continue this <br />spring. Any northern pike that are captured will be transported to Harvey Gap Reservoir or <br />another recreational fishing water. <br /> <br />Action: <br /> <br />Additional field studies to be conducted on experimental removal of <br />non-native sport fish that prey on endangered fish.
