<br />Gl)!.143 <br /> <br />-20- <br /> <br />Variations in annual temperatures are not as great as for pre- <br />cipitation, and the average for a 20 or 30 year reoord will vary little <br />from that of a 40 to 50 year reoord. For that reason it did not appear <br />necessary to tabulate more of the tanperature record than that of reoent <br />years. The eleven years shown in the tabulation present a picture of the <br />amount of fluotuation that oan be expeoted. <br /> <br />19. Relative HumiditYI <br /> <br />The only record of relative humidity in this'seotion was made <br />t\t Montrose between 1885 and 1893. The average monthly relative humidity <br />was computed from an average of two daily observations, one made in the <br />evening and one in the morning. This method gi ves a olose approximation <br />to the daily average humidity. <br /> <br />Compared to long time reoords of humidity at Grand Junotion and <br />other stations the average of 51.1% appears to be a reasonable value. Al- <br />so. monthly variations are in line with other observations. <br /> <br />Computation of present and normal values of hUlllidity are pre- <br />sented in Part n. ' <br /> <br />20. Wind VelooitYI <br /> <br />Observations of wind velocity were made conourrently with the <br />relative humidity record during the period 188~-1893. Recent observa- <br />tions have been made at the office of the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users' <br />Association in Montrose, records of which are shown in Table 11 for 19~ <br />through l1aroh 194,. Aooording to the available inform~,tion the anemolll8- <br />tel's in the two periOds were at the same height above the ground. Con- <br />siderably higher velocities were reoorded during the early period than <br />has been the case reoently. This may be due to a difference in instru- <br />ments or a differeIlOe in 'the sheltering effeot of buildings and trees or <br />both. <br /> <br />These records show that average wind velooities at building <br />tops or a little greater might range from 4.5 m.p.h. to 6+ m.p.h. This <br />range of values oompares with a near ground velocity of 0.9 m.p.h. ob- <br />served at the nearby evaporation station (See Part II). Wind velocities <br />at' otl1er points, in the area have never been recorded. <br /> <br />21. Evaporation: <br /> <br />No records of evaporation have ever been made in the basin <br />other than those in oonnection with the 193B-41 investigation. Records <br />made at that time are presented in the discussion of the investigation. <br />
