()1)1!33

-15-

13. Appropriations I

Water rights of appropriators in the Unoompahgre Valley are dis-
oussed briefly here for the purpose of enlarging upon the pioture of de-
velopment rather than from an administrative angle. Referring to Table
No. 7 it will l:e seen that the first deoree in Di strict 41 from the River
was dated 1880. The large expansion of original priorities came in 1882
and IBB3, and ditohes continued to be built through 1887, although in de-
or easing numbers. The large number of deore<ls given a date of l888 are
for seoond and third appropriations for ditohes already existing. From
1888 to 1908 there Wlre only three SWl.11 ditches constructed. Sinoe the
government projeot started there have been three more ditches oonstruoted
and granted priorities.

On the tributaries in Distriot 41, development started in 1862
and progressed gradually until lBB9. Between l8B9 and 1908, six prior-
ities were granted. Sinoe 1908 there have been 44 appropriations, most
of whioh are extremely small. The largest of these recent appropriations
involves the rediversion of Cimarron water whioh has been turned into
Cedar Creek.

The summary at the bottom of Table 7, shows in a gftneral way
~at has happened in District 68.

I
,
