An annual average of $60,000, or $0.70 per acre irrigated, will
therefore be available for repaJ~ent of construction charges. The total
which eould be made available for repayment in a 40-year period would be
$2,400,000.

l....\
Cj

Plate A graphically portrays, for reservoirs of various capacities,
the relationship between the annual cost to the water users and the amounts
which the water users would have available to meet annual construction and
operation and maintenance charges.

Fcrrms

According to the 1945 census of agriculture, a total of 91,686 acres
of crop land was harvested on 770 reporting farms in Conejos County during
the yoar 1944. Of this number, 249 or 32.4 percent harvested less than 30
acres, while 274 or 35.5 percent harvested 100 acres or more. The farms
on which, 200 acres or more were harvested are to a considerable extent' live-
stock enterprises VQth large acreages in native hay and meadow. The distri-
bution of farms reporting by acres harvested is as follows:

Acres Harvested Number Percent of Total
1 - 9'acr9S 123 16.0
10 - 19' acres 80 10.4
20 - 29 acres 46 6.0
30 - 49 acres 100 13.0
50 - 99 acres 147 19.1
100 -199 acres 158 20.5
200 acres and over 116 15.0
Totals 770 100.0

In Conejos County and in the project area the principal types of farm
enterpris"s are general field crop farms and livestock enterprises, alth'Qugh
there are a limited number of specialized units such as vegetable farms,
dairy farms and poultry farms. The 1945 census of agriculture classified
749 farms by type of enterprise in Conejos County. Of these farms 314 or
41.9 percent reported the total value of farm products as being less than'
$1,000 per farm. The average value of farm products for this group was
about $32A per farm.

The following tabulation shows the number of Conejos County farm
enterprises in each type of farming group and the percent of each group
producing farm products valued at less than $1,000 per farm.

7
