GROSS OUTPUT AND REVENUE OF HOOVER POWER PLANT

6,250,000,000 billion kilowatt-hours of energy were generated during the
operating year 1943-44. This amount represented more than half of the
total amount of energy used within transmission distance of the Hoover
plant. And the Hoover plant continues to supply more than half of all
energy requirements in its pov,ler-market area.
As of June 30, 1947, a grand total of 39,655,519,030 kilowatt.hours of
energy have been generated by this giant power plant.
The income resulting from the Hoover Dam power plant has risen steadily.
In its first fiscal year of operation, 1937-38, the gross income amounted to
nearly $3,000,000. Gross annual income reached $4,500,000 during the
fiscal year 1939-40.
As the number of generating units increased so also did the gross re\'enue_
Gross yearly returns have averaged nearly $8~OOO,OOO since 1943.
Since commercial power production began, a grand total of $62,657,725
has been returned to the Treasury of the United States from the sale of
energy. After operation and maintenance costs have been deducted the net
returned to the Treasury has been approximately $47,000,000.
Fourteen high-voltage transmission lines connect the Hoover power plant
with its power-market area. Three lines terminate at Los Angeles 266 miles
away_ Two lines extend directly to Chino, Calif., a distance of 233 miles,
and a third line also extends to Chino via Hayfield, Calif. A seventh line
goes to San Bernardino, Calif., while other lines extend to; Kingman, Ariz.;
Needles, Calif.; Pioche, Nev.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Boulder City, Nev.; and
two lines go to the basic magnesium plant at Henderson, Nev.
Parker Dam, on the Colorado River 155 miles below Hoover Dam, has an
installed capacity of 120,000 kilowatts. The Parker power plant produces
about 750,000,000 kilowatt.hours of energy annually. Transmission lines
from Parker Dam supply energy to Phoenix, Yuma. Tucson, and other points
in Arizona, and to the Imperial Valley in California. The Hoover and Parker
power plants are interconnected to secure maximum benefits from these
important plants.
of 1944, four additional generators had been placed in operation, bringing
the plant to its present capacity of 1,034,800 kilowatts.
Two of the foregoing generators supply energy {or the city of Los Angeles,
and two serve the Southern California Edison Co.
One of the major users of energy during the late war, was the huge basic
magnesium plant. Constructed some 12 miles northwest of Boulder City.
by Defense Plant Corporation, this plant, in 1943, consumed one-quarter
of the total output of the Hoover power plant. In this plant was produced
a substantial portion of the magnesium used in the manufacture of incendiary
bombs which ultimately found their targets on the industrial cities of
Germany and her allies.
As new generators were added, the plant output in terms of kilowatt.hours
of energy increased. Under the stress of wartime demands, more than
The ROllliiied Benefits

As the amount of energy generated at Hoover Dam has risen steadily; so
also have the benefits ramified into the varied phases of Southwestern
economy.
A direct result of the Hoover power plant has been the lowering of energy
rates throughout the power-market area. Nowhere has this trend been more
pronounced than in Las Vegas, Nev. In fact, Las Vegas enjoys one of the
lowest energy rates of any American city. Rates in this Nevada city have
been reduced from a maximum of 8 cents a kilowatt. hour to 3 cents. And
the rate for energy over and above 500 kilowatt-hours is only 5 mills.
Likewise lowered energy rates have been the result in Los Angeles. In
the first year of operation, it has been estimated that Hoover energy resulted
