Roosevelt
said:
"This is an engineering victory oj the first order--anotker great achieve-
ment of American resourcefulness, skill and determination. This is why
1 congratulate you who have created Boulder Dam 1 and on behalf oj the
Nation say to you 'Well done.'''
The great structure, an outstanding achievement of modern engineering
technique, was an accomplished fact. And, so it stands today-an enduring
monument to man's ingenuity.
But, Hoover Darn is significant not only because of its physical propor-
tions, or due to the skills and techniques which it represents. Its signifi-
cance is much more far-reaching than these. For its construction has
resulted in benefits to the enti re region of the Lower Colorado River Basin-
benefits which ramify into every phase of the Nation's economy. These
benefits, now being realized, gave impetus to those who made possible the
construction of the proj ect.
'When the Committee on Irrigation and Reclamation of the United States
Senate in March 1928 endorsed the construction of the multibenefit dam,
it made this significant prophecy:
"A mighty river, now a source of destruction, is to be curbed and put to
work in the interests of society."

1 R~"am~d Hoo\'er Dam in 1%7 hJ' th~ 80th Congress.

Typical scene at Hoover Dam.
During 1947 mere than a million persons visited the area.

31
