o
C)
N
o
00
~

PROBLEM AREA DESCRIPTIONS
GROUP A

ARKANSAS

1. . Ozarks Area, ASA 1101. This area includes fourteen north
Arkansas counties, all of which lie in the White River Basin. One
problem issue extends into Problem Area 2, which includes Benton
and Washington Counties. The total area of P. A. 1 is 7811 square
miles. Terrain is generally hilly, but with local relief seldom
exceeding 200 feet. However, the south eastern portion of the area
extends into the Boston Mountains in which local reliefs (1600 ft.)
are common, and extreme stream dissection has resulted in deep val-
leys and steep sided mountains.

Climate, in P. A. 1, can be briefly described by the following
table.

Average Annual Precipitation

42 inches

Temperature
Mean Minimum (January)
Mean Maximum (July)
Mean Annual

240 F
920 E
590 F

Population

1970 census
1975
1985
2000

158,560
165,588
181,260
208,106

Population increases in P. A. 1 have resulted in part, from
an influx of persons of retirement age into developments near the
many excellent fishing lakes in the area.

Earnings
1967 dollars

(thousands)
1975
29,946
57,622

2000
35,526
163,650

1985
31,062
95,598

Agriculture
Hs.nuf ac tur ing

Sources of agricultural earnings vary from almost exclusively
livestock in the western portion of the area to primarily crops in
the eastern part. Manufacturing is widely varied as to type:
agriculture related is most prevalent, followed by forest products,
other industries such as pla!ltics, chemical, clothing and metal
fabrication are scattered through the region.

Tourism has been a major industry in Arkansas; the northern
part of the state enjoys the major part of the tourism dollar.

10

~
I

I

I
I

I
I

I
I

I

1

I

,
I

I
I
'.

I

_I
