o018sa

.

RIO BLANCO

The Blanco diversion dam site is situated on the Rio Blanco about

0.8 miles downstream from the Blanco damsite, which is located a short

distance below the Rio Blanco gage, and about 1.,2 miles upstream from

the diversion conduit. The maximum capacity of the canal from the dam

to the conduit is 460 cfs and the conduit from the diversion to the Little

Navajo diversion dam site is 520 cfs.

The runoff at the diversion dam site was estimated from the

Rio Blanco near Pagosa Springs gage by USing the drainage area at the

gage and at the proposed upstream storage dam. The use of the drainage

area at the storage dam site gave a more conservative figure for runoff

available. The drainage area at the Rio Blanco gage is 58.0 square

miles and at the dam site is 66.2 square miles. 66.2+58.0 = 1.14

The runoff at the gage was multiplied by 1.14 to give the runoff at the

diversion dam site.

The required by-passes for downstream requirements were met

whenever the natural flow of the Rio Blanco was equal to or greater

than the requirement. Spills were determined by calculating the reduoeq

flow at the gage that, when added to the required reduced by-pass,

would exceed the capaCity of the diversion canal. A daily inspectie!n

of the gaged flows was used in calculating these spills as follow/il:

.

.

-4-
