OUR

STATE

IS

NOT

HOW IS OUR STATE REACTING
TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS?

A. Only a handful of Colorado counties have any effective zoning ane
,the state's power to insist on adequate planning and sound lane
development is all but non-existent. We are bulldozing "Colorft(
Colorado" with little or no restraints.

I
B. We still spend over one-half million taxpayer dollars to "Sell Colorado"
though we can't adequately handle the growth we already have.

C, Of the 150 environmental bills introduced in the last session of the
legislature, only two passed, Defeated were proposals for Environ:
mental Policy Acts (H,B. 1005 and S.B. 331). Citizen Lawsuits to
Protect the Environment (lI.B, 1307), Air Pollution Control Legislatio~
(H,B. 1549, H.B, 1550, H.B. 1551, H.B, 1552), The Wildlife Environ;
ment Preservation Act (S.B, 63), The Wild Horses Protection Bill
(5,B, 27), the legislation to reduce phosphates in detergents (H.B~
1045), strip mining control legislation (H.B, 1548), Department of
Ecology (H.B. 1556) and others too numerous to mention. Environ-
mental protection not only failed to advance, it feU further behind.

The public should not be so confident in their government that they
remain silent about the momentous decisions being made for them.

<650
