In 1985, Mexico's pumping from its San Luis Mesa well field within five miles
(eight kilometers) of the boundary near San Luis amounted to ~0,299 acre feet
(37,373,000 cub~c meters). The following quantities were pumped in calendar
years 1976 through 1985: .

Thousands of
1976 97,870 120,722
In 1985, as in the previous two years, Mexico's pumping of ground water was reduced
because flood control releases from the dams in the U,S. resulted in ample waters
into the river to enable gravity diversions by Mexico to serve its needs.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (UBSR) has completed 21 of 35 wells on the u.S.
side within five miles of the Arizona-Sonora boundary near San Luis for pro-
tective and regulatory pumping and 18 of the 21 wells were pumped in 1985. The
remaining 14 wells have been deferred until water supply needs make construction
necessary.
The Commission is continuing, under'Minute No. 242, its program for exchange of
groundwater data for the major groundwater basins lying partly in the United
States and partly in Mexico including the Colorado River delta area. The
objective of the exchange is to make available hydrologic, geologic and water
quality data in either country, to both Sections of the Commission to enable
definition of existing or potential problems.
