"If
you found my portrait of Reagan
to be complex, that's because he is
a paradoxical man. His own wife
said in her memoirs that he's not
an easy person. to understand. I
was struck recently when Edmund
Morris, Reagan's biographer, said
he is wrestling with the paradox of
Reagan. When he said that, I was
relieved, partly out of vanity."

..........
~

NOONAN from Page 1 F

Probably none displayed more
savvy and talent than Noonan, the
40-year-old daughter of a New Jer-
sey appliance salesman, who has
parlayed a brief White House ex-
perience into sizable speaking fees
and a contract with Random
House for a still-unfinished novel.
She lives with her 3-year.old son in
an apartment on New Vork's fash-
ionable East Side.
Besides unsolicited editing,
Noonan'S greatest frustration in
the White House was gaining ac-
cess to the president. Still, she
managed to write an engaging,
perplexing portrayal of the former
president, published last year.

(1!1

table, because they are so unusu-
al: Some are more than 95 feet
tall and 76 feet wide.
