<br />. Gunnison River yesterday made
<br />an environmental group's list of .
<br />the 10 American rivers "most en-
<br />dangered" by hydroelectric dams,
<br />mining operati.ons, pollution and
<br />land development.
<br />A separate list of 15 "highly
<br />threatened" rivers included the
<br />Animas and Arkansas rivers.
<br />

<br />son River is the eighth most en-
<br />dangered in the country. ,
<br />In each of the Colorado cases,
<br />the problems reflect the ongoing
<br />debate between government offi-
<br />cials, developers and farmers, who
<br />want water for new developments
<br />or irrigation, and environmental-
<br />ists or people who want to swim,
<br />faft or visit the scenic areas,
<br />./ "Colorado's rivers are very im~
<br />portant," said Matthew Hunting-
<br />ton of American Rivers, "They
<br />have spectacular scenery and are
<br />a great fish and wildlife habitat."

<br />having the most rivers on the list

<br />vert two-thirds.of its water to the
<br />Uncompahgre River.
<br />
<br />. Animas River: The Animas is
<br />threatened by a $500 million water
<br />irrigation and water use plan to
<br />dam the river and create a reser-
<br />voir. Because the project would
<br />threaten the Colorado Squawfish
<br />- a huge relative of the minnow
<br />that can get as big as 100 pounds
<br />- the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Ser-
<br />vice had rejected the project.
<br />However, the Bureau of Reclama-
<br />tion is urging a new plan that will
<br />take'intoaccount the fish habitat.
<br />
<br />. Arkansas River: Originating
<br />high in mountains near Leadville,
<br />the Arkansas has been polluted by
<br />nearly a century of mining opera-
<br />
<br />tlons. The Bureau of Land Man-
<br />agement recently urged that part
<br />of it be designated a Wild and Sce-
<br />nic River, which bans any develop-
<br />ment causing adverse impact on
<br />the river, However, .Colorado
<br />Springs exercised its right to draw
<br />water from the river and proposes
<br />bnilding the Elephant Rock Dam.
<br />
<br />Other "endangered" rivers 'on
<br />the 1991 list are: the Alsek and
<br />. Tatshenshini rivers in Alaska; the
<br />American in Californi.a;Penobscot
<br />in Maine; Susquehanna in Pennsyl-
<br />vania; uPP~LMississippi; Columbia
<br />and Snake; Passaic in New Jersey,
<br />and New in .North Carolina.
<br />
<br />Since 1973, the group has helped
<br />protect 9,300 miles of rivers in the
<br />Wild and Scenic Rivers System.
