ENVIRONHENTAL DlPACT

The Desalting Complex will reduce the salinity of Colorado River
water delivered to Mexico at Morelos Dam, which will be a positive
step toward improving the social and economic well-being of the
human population. The complex will divert about 43,000 acre-feet
of 9,600 ppm TDS water via a concrete-lined bypass drain to Santa
Clara Slough in Mexico near the Gulf of California. These flows
will remain within the slough and will be conducive to the develop-
ment of additional marsh habitat. The desalting plant will re~uire
35 megawatts of electric generating capacity, thus necessitating the
development of additional generating capacity. Adverse impacts
associated with fossil fUel generation and transmission will occur.
The Desalting Complex and Coachella Canal Lining project will utilize
2,269 acres af land comprised of 669 acres of cropland, 260 acres of
riparian and 1,340 acres of Sonoran Desert. The permanent use of these
lands will cause a small reduction in the overall population of wildlife
species living in the project area. This adverse impact is not considered
significant.

22
