<br />FEDERAL ACT AUTHORIZING COLORADO RIVEn <br />COMPACT <br /> <br />An Act to permit a. tompact UI' agreement between tile States of <br />Arizona, California, Colorado, :Kevadn, .New Mexico, Utah, <br />and 'Vyoming, respecting the (lisposition and apportionment <br />of the watel'~ of the Colorado niver, and for other purposes. <br /> <br />WHEREAS the Colorado.Hiver and its several tributaries <br />rise within and flow through or t'l'Olll tlte boundaries between the <br />States of .Ar'izollil, California. Colorado, Ne\'mla, New Mexicoj <br />Utah, and "(rowing; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS the terl'itory indudcd within the drainnge area <br />of the said stream and its tributaries is largely arid and in small <br />part inigated. and t.he present and future development, llece:-;si. <br />ties and gener"al welfal'e of eal'h of :-:ai(1 States nud of tile United <br />States require tIle further m.;e of the waters of said streams fol' <br />il'l'igation and otber beneficial purposes, anu that future litigation <br />and conflict respectibg the use amI distribution of said waters <br />should be avoide(l and settled by compact between said States; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS the governors of sairJ sereral States have named <br />and appointed their reHpccti'-e commissioners for the purposes <br />aforesaid, 3nu have presented their resolutipn to tile President <br />of the United States I'Clluesting the appointment of a l'evreseuta- <br />tive on behalf of tbe United States to participate in said negoti- <br />ations and to represent the interests of the United States; Now, <br />therefore, <br /> <br />He It Enacted by tile Senate and House of Representat;ces of <br />the United States of Amerka. ion Congress A.ssembled-, That con- <br />sent of Congres~ i8 hereby given to the States of Arizona, Cali- <br />fm'nin, Colorado, Ne\'ndn, New Mexico, Utah, and "-'yorning to <br />negotiate and enter into a compact or agreement not later than <br />.January 1, 1!}~3, providing for nu equitable division and appor- <br />tionment among said States of the water suppl,y of the Colorado <br />RiH."l' and of the stre..'1l11s tributary tllereto, upon condition that a <br />sllitable person, who shall he appointed by the President of the <br />United States. sha11 participate in said negotiations. as the re- <br />preseutative of and for the protection of the interests of the <br />United States, and shall make rel-lort to Congress of the proceed- <br />ings and of any compact or agreement entereu into, and the snm <br />of $10.000, 01' 80 much thercof as may he necessar,r, is hereby <br />authorized to be appropriated to pa:r the salary and expenses of <br />the representative of the United State~ appointed hereunder; <br />PROVIDED, That an,r sueh compact or agreement shall not be <br />lJinding or obligatory upon an,y of the parties thereto unless and <br />until the same shall bave been avpro\'ed by the legislature of each <br />of sairl States and hy the Congress of the United States. <br /> <br />[ Hi ] <br /> <br />.
