DETERMINATION OF SUCCESS OR FAILURE OF AN ESTABLISHMENT SITE

NPS/AGFD will work in cooperation with USBR and USFWS to develop
criteria to evaluate the success or failure of a new wild
population of KAS. Supplemental stocking of KAS to new
establishment sites will cease upon a determination of failure. It
should be noted that the USFWS has proposed a preliminary set of
criteria for the successful establishment of a new wild population
of KAS. Those criteria provide a useful starting point from which
final designations of success and failure can be made.

D. PROPOSED MONITORING SCHEDULE

Following translocation, KAS population dynamics at establishment
sites will be monitored by AGFD using the techniques described in
Stevens et al. (1997bl. AGFD proposes the following monitoring
schedule:

Monitoring Trip 1 (September-October 1998): Evaluate translocation
conditions, and if population augmentation at establishment
sites is necessary next season. AGFD will conduct a seasonal
(post-reproductive) population estimate.

Monitoring Trip 2 (March-April
conditions, and if population
sites is necessary in May-June.
population estimate.

1999): Evaluate overwinter
augmentation at establishment
AGFD will conduct a seasonal

Monitoring Trip 3 (May-June 1999): Conduct seasonal (pre-
reproductive) population estimate and topographical survey of
vegetation area.

Monitoring Trip 4 (July-August 1999): Conduct seasonal (peak
reproductive period) population estimate and estimate extent
of dispersal. Augment established populations with stock from
vp to ensure population stability and genetic variability.

Financial support for AGFD KAS monitoring activities will be
provided through a combination of funding sources (i.e., CUPCA,
USBR, and AGFD). Financial support for logistical activities has
not yet been secured.
