4

RESEARCH PROCEDURE

~ The research procedure in 1981 was similar to that in 1980. The
CO
~ plot diagram (Figure A-l) shows the field layout. The location of the
l'\;I
forage plots is the same as 1980 but the barley, wheat, corn, and

potato plots were in different locations. One addition, unique to 1981,

was the addition of sheet metal covers to one potato plot which was

irrigated with salty water. This was done to protect the plant leaves

from the irrigation water so that it would fall on the soil and be

neutralized there if any "acidic" irrigation water was applied. This

was done to check on the irrigation supply to see if there would be

a difference in water applied to the soil compared with application to

the leaves.

Another addition was the collection of soils data at various

locations on the Hunter and Huntington farms in the spring in anticipation

of getting more involved in what was happening to the farm as a whole.

The varieties of crops planted were the same as 1980 (Fremont wheat,

Steptoe barley, PX-20 corn, Pontiac potatoes (late) and Norgold potatoes,

early). Again in 1981 there was a problem with livestock getting onto

the plots which resulted in damage to the corn which made the yield

results from corn uncertain.

Soil samples were taken at several locations on the plot in 1981 as

previous years in both spring and fall.

Harvest techniques were similar to previous years. Three crops of

forages were collected in 1981 which was 2 years after planting. The

first year after replanting in 1980, was so infested with weeds that no

reliable comparison could be made.
