24

FARM IRRIGATION IN 1981

~
~ Huntington Farm
~
~ The irrigation applied to the Huntington Farm in 1981 was 570.3

acre feet. The area irrigated was l53 acres. Thus 3.73 ft (44.7 inches)

of water per acre was applied. A study of the general climate of the

area indicated maximum evapotranspiration of about 30 inches/year. The

irrigation water applied on the plots, where irrigation was applied to

match evapotranspiration (irrigation level 5), was 27.6 inches from June

10 through September 2. This agrees quite closely to the 30 inches for

the entire year. Since it was desired to irrigate with about 10% leaching,

it soon became apparent that the water supplied to the evaporation pond

was too much for the acreage available. Apparently more water was put

into the pond than was originally expected, especially during time of

breakdown and repair. Thus, more land will be needed to handle this extra

water. Possibilities are being considered to enlarge the pond and enlarge

the acreage irrigated to about 300 acres total.

Hunter Farm

The irrigation applied to the Hunter Farm in 1981 was 410 acre feet

to 245 acres. This amounts to 1.67 feet (20.1 inches)/acre. Thus there

was, on the average, no leaching in 1981. The climatic study for this

area indicated that yearly evapotranspiration was about 33 inches/year.

Since two more units are in process of being built at this site, more land

will be added for irrigation in the future.
