002~3t

diameter and with multiple pipes as needed. Diversion dams with gated

spillways would be used to divert water from uncontrolled rivers into

canals. No tunnels were used for Route A.

Side canals were used to serve identified problem areas located

Some distance from the main canal. The canals were routed to the

upstream side of the areas to be served and were terminated at reservoir

sites within or just upstream from the service areas. The purpose of

this routing was to minimize the need for additional pumping from the

reservoirs to the service areas.

The canals were laid out with a slope of .00034 or 1 foot every

5~ miles. Rough terrain was avoided where possible. Cuts and fills

were normally limited to 50 feet or less and to 100 feet in extreme

cases. Siphons were limited to a maximum 6-mile length. An effort

was made to minimize the number of pumping plants. Pumping plant

discharge lines were limited to a maximum length of 2 miles. Drop

structures were generally limited to a 5-foot drop and were spaced

one-half mile apart where used.

The valleys of the Niobrara and Keya Paha Rivers are environmen-

tally sensitive; therefore, no storage was placed on these streams and

the valleys were crossed by buried siphons. Routes were laid out to

avoid interference with existing water resources facilities, urban

areas, wildlife refuges, wetlands, and historic sites.

ROUTES CONSIDERED BUT NOT SELECTED

Western Main Canal Route

A western route from Lake Francis Case to the vicinity of Bonny

Reservoir was considered. This route and other alternative canal routes

are shown in figure 8. The route would run westward across southern

~o
